16-Try Thriller for the Girls in Green and Gold

Melbourne Minxes v Ashby & Sheffield
U13 Minxes first home game of the season saw us welcome our neighbours Ashby and old friends from last season, the Sheffield Swans. Ashby & Swans clustered together so we could play 12 a side.
The opposition started the game by kicking straight to Evie. We initially thought she was going to breeze straight through like she did last weekend, however it wasn’t to be as her strong run was brought to ground by a good tackle. The Minxes worked well at recycling the ball at the ruck and soon Abigail crashed over for her first try of the game. The teamwork from the girls is now really starting to pay off as it didn’t matter who had the ball there was always someone running in support. Mya was on the receiving end of two great passes, carried well and was over to score twice in the first quarter.
Q1 Score: Melbourne 3 – Ashby / Sheffield 0
A quick chat from James at the break asked for more from the girls, the aggression and passion from the week prior was missing. The game restarted, the ball was quickly in Alicia’s hands, but it was her legs doing the work as she made an impressive drive only to be tackled short. In support was Evie who went over the line to score. Melbourne then had a phase of play that saw 5 Minxes touch the ball, Amy, Olivia, Kezia, Abigail V and Delia - anyone of these could have scored but it was Delia who got the points on this occasion.
Q2 Score: Melbourne 5 – Ashby / Sheffield 0
The third quarter saw us down to 11 players due to illness, however Melbourne weren’t phased, and it wasn’t long before a great partnership in the middle paid off between Amy and Eleanor who ran it wide to score in the corner. Emily then took a charge up the middle of the field and had an impressive leg drive making metres with Abigail in close support to score - fantastic girls! Clever thinking worked in our favour when the girls got a free kick 5 metres out, the ball was passed to the demon leg driver Alicia to crash over with a few girls on top!
Q3 Score - Melbourne 3 – Ashby / Sheffield 0
By now the coaches and spectators were wanting more and more from the girls and the newer U13s were shouting “wide” on several occasions as we kept running back into contact time after time. Fearn and Kezia were soon rewarded when the ball came out wide and both had a strong carry and offload. The work on the ruck last week was paying off as we were counter rucking strongly and winning the ball back. The Minxes at last decided to show us some lovely rugby, passing the ball through hands; Abigail, Eleanor, Amy allowing Emily to score under the posts. The final play of the day was what we had been wanting to see all day; Emily got the ball and probably could have charged over and scored but instead opted to draw the defender and give the ball wide before it went through another set of hands to Abigail who cut inside for a final score.
Q4 Score - Melbourne 5 - Ashby / Sheffield 0

Still work to do, especially on moving the ball into space, but the Minxes are showing real progress and great teamwork.
