Great opening game of the season

Excellent opening game of the season with lots of new rules including 15 a side, 8 man scrums, uncontested lineouts, penalty kicks, conversions, sin bins etc

Great to win our opening game to nil especially with very little contact played over the summer period.

For the first half it was good end to end play with some good rugby by both teams. A debut for Melbourne from Ollie Jenkinson, who got well involved in the game throughout and in particular from a solid scrum made some good ground to pass out to Sam Sekhon who scored Melbourne’s first try.

10 minutes of solid play later, Robin Bentley ran in Melbourne’s second try. Then right on the cusp of half time, Frankie Thompson opened up through the Loughborough ranks for a cracking try, with Josh Pearch securing the first conversion points of the season. Melbourne went into half time ahead 17 – 0.

After half time, Seb Williams broke through from the half way line to open the second half brace of tries. A few minutes later, Sam Sekhon proved the sprinting was not just the purview of the backs collecting a chip and chase from Lewis Quinn and securing Melbourne’s 5th try. Seb Williams made a great kick to get the 2 point conversion.

The final try by Frankie Thompson was a result of great back play passing the ball all the way down the line. Josh Pearch then got the last points of the game with a great conversion to bring the final score to Melbourne 36 – 0 Loughborough.
