The U16s travelled to Veseyans - just north of Birmingham - for a fine and evenly matched encounter with a side that produced clean rugby with some good hard running.
Melbourne for once played a kicking positional game that really worked. Bates made an early kick to the corner where Rustom and Jansen poured through, and from Rusty's tackle, Jansen was able to pick up ball in the resulting defensive ruck/maul and get down the blindside to open up the scoring. We were playing uphill - not upwind, but uphill - and after absorbing some great Veseyans pressure - resulting in some great try saving tackles by Melbourne - but in the end two tries to Veseyans, we ended the first half down 10-12.
In the second - with the slope in our favour - we carried on the kicking game to get territory with great effect, and Melbourne came back in the second half with three tries (Moore, Rustom, Ireland) to take it away.
Veseyans gave us a great game.
