First outing as "Longbourne"

Sit down, relax and pour yourself a large one as there is so much to report on what was a pulsating game.
I could summarise this match and justify the result in two sentences but I won’t.
The game was played at a blistering pace and you could see that initially both teams were quite rusty as there were a lot of handling errors and lost scrums and lineouts.
The first try of the match was a solo effort from the Harborough number 11, who after a few missed tackles, a reoccurring theme to all of Harborough’s scores, scored under the posts.
The resulting kick was missed by their number 10.score 5-0
We kicked off and again after a few missed tackles another solo run by this time their number 9 to again score under the posts, this time their 15 kicked the conversion. Score 12-0
Another solo break by Harborough’s number 10 gained ground into our half and a lucky bounce from a poor offload fell to the Harborough number 2 who dived over to score Harborough’s 3rd try of the match, again though the kick was missed. Score 17-0
¼ time was called.
A talking from James seemed to wake up Longbourne, (The name we have adopted for the Melbourne – Long Eaton pairing), as Longbourne’s tackling, for a short while at least, became ferocious, the ball was won in the opposition 22 and some quality ball handling and direct running led to what was the best try of the day scored by Longbourne’s hooker Hannah, the conversion was missed. Score 17-5
After some broken play from both teams Harborough won a lineout, this was won and the ball passed to the number 9 who again ran through a few missed tackles to score another solo try under the posts, kick was missed. Score 22-5
½ time was called.
After the kick off Longbourne attacked but after not securing the ball at the breakdown let Harborough’s number 9 to solo almost the length of the pitch to score under the posts, the Harborough 15 now had put her kicking boots on because she never missed another kick. Score 29-5
Harborough’s sixth try came almost exactly as their 5th had with a Longbourne handling error leading to a turnover ball and another solo break from number 11 to score under the posts, kick was good. Score 36-5
From the resulting kick off Longbourne attacked and some deft handling and offloads from what seemed to be most of the team took us into the Harborough 22. Harborough’s forwards constant attempts to kill the ball led to the ref awarding Longbourne a penalty try. Score 36-12
¾ time was called.
From the kick off Harborough were able to string a few passes together for the first time in the match without knocking on or dropping the ball led to their best try for number 10 to again sprint away at the end to score under the posts, kick was good. Score 43-12
Harborough attacked again but after a forward pass a scrum was awarded. Longbourne had dominated the scrums with their power but the speed of the Harborough hooker’s feet won the ball for them, the number 9 broke away on another solo run only for her to be stopped dead in her tracks by yet another great crunching tackle, from what was a man of the match performance, by Abi Watson led to Harborough’s number 10 to collect the loose ball and sprint through passing to the oncoming number 13 to score under the posts, kick was good. Final score 50-12.
To summarise an enjoyable game to watch on the whole played in good spirits and with plenty of effort was dominated by missed tackles and some poor attacking lines from the Longbourne team and three speed merchant Harborough girls making the most of the said poor tackling running to scoring solo tries. Other than that the two teams were quite evenly matched even if Longbourne were the more gifted team in Rugby terms.
This gives James and the coaching team something to work on in training and the Girls something to think about in the upcoming weeks and matches.

Man of the Match - Abigail Watson
