Melbourne Rout and Romp to stamp out Stamford Pain (reports Matt Derbyshire)
Conditions: Clear and bright with slight headwind.
Following a heavy loss earlier in the season, in the reverse fixture, Melbourne sought to right some wrongs and create a more accurate account of their abilities as a team against a strong Stamford side.
With the pitches holding water Melbourne found themselves on the Univeristy of Derby's 3G pitch.
From the whistle Melbourne looked like a team on a mission as they played a balanced game, ensuring the grunt work was carried out first and foremost and that they played in the right areas of the pitch. This was how the first try was scored with strong forward work being finished off through the pace of returning winger Andy Martin.
Further pressure exerted on Stamford's 22 soon saw the impressive Jack Pearce run a great line which was fed by the sprightly La Pagè to see the second row barge his way through to the line for Melbourne's second try.
Stamford tried to get back in the game with strong runs from their big blindside flanker and using the bulky centres to find a route one but they struggled to penetrate a strong defensive effort.
Melbourne countered this period of pressure which again saw the powerful Pearce pick and drive for a second try to his tally.
Stamford were unable to get a foothold and tried to spread wide but to no avail as Melbourne's defence not only stood firm but rocked the visitors back and had them back peddling when turned over.
Will Judge got in on the act with his fourth try in three games following a strong maul.
At this point things took a turn for the worse as Melbourne appeared to get on the wrong side of the referee who were quickly down to 13 as two yellow cards for Pop (side entry) Lakin and Morris (I don't retreat) Hall meant the home side were facing a big challenge. For the most of that 10 minutes Stamford tried to make the extra numbers count but focused defence and superb resilience saw them through that period.
Back to fifteen the Green Army looked to finish the game off and put the purple black and whites to bed.
With the ball deep into Stamford territory quick thinking from the irripressible John Marchbank saw him cross the line wide out right.
Shortly after a forward play saw the ball move to Euan Holden who through a shimmy and ran straight scoring a fantastic final (and sixth) try.
FINAL SCORE 43 - 0
